Subject of a glut of good news in recent days, XPEC Entertainment’s (3662) stock price has also begun to move. Monday the stock reached NT$123.5 in intersession trading, the highest price since its IPO. However, market rumors insinuate that, months ago, the company’s largest shareholder sought out a number of lenders to negotiate matters pertaining to a stock-based loan. Since this is a sensitive matter, market insiders suspect that this wave of XPEC buying is mostly bullish speculation. On March 31, XPEC signed a contract with the New Taipei City Government and moved its operational headquarters to the “Bitan Youyue” office space in the Xindian MRT station. It will also imitate Steve Jobs’ garage startup by opening “garage coffee.” On that day XPEC stock soared on high volume and closed the day at its upper limit of NT$122.5, after reaching the highest price since its IPO. Even though its stock is performing strongly, fundamentally, its operating income nosedived 93.31% last year with profit greatly reduced by 80% and net income for the entire year at only NT$1 per share. Its monthly revenue performance is gradually rebounding. Based on the record revenue of NT$208 million posted in December 2013, revenue for January and February grew by a factor of 3 and 1.93, respectively. At the same time, XPEC has partnered with Zhong Hui Century to establish “Le Sheng Shi Ji,” an entertainment platform for expanding into the mainland market. The company is optimistic regarding future operational development and it is obvious the stock price is echoing this. It is worth noting that rumors have surfaced in the market accusing XPEC’s largest shareholder of collateralizing company stock worth an approximate market value of NT$1.5 billion for a NT$500 million loan. However, the stock’s low market liquidity led to hesitation on the part of the lender. With a linear spike in stock price, market insiders feel, without solid fundamentals, the risk of a future reversal in the stock price is gradually increasing.
