Feeding a need: Ter highlighting the media's role in society during his speech. THe Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KLSCCCI) recently reminded us that it is not only about business all the time. As the story of flight MH370 continues to unfold, KLSCCCI president Datuk Ter Leong Yap, at a media appreciation night organised by the chamber recently, reflected on the fragility of life and how people were often torn between competing priorities. “We are torn between professional and personal life. Just like the recent MH370 incident, we believe the media has demonstrated dedication, day and night, following through every piece of information from different sources, just to ensure accurate and timely reporting to the people,” he said in his speech. Themed “Fostering a Caring Society”, the dinner’s performances and lucky draw segment were cancelled in respecting the current sentiment pertaining to the MH370. Ter said news was like daily bread for the brain, stimulating readers intellectually while feeding their need to know about the happenings around the world. “With today’s technology, news is available anytime and anywhere. There are also indications that news is trending towards just and fair, impartial and professional content to provide a holistic perspective of an event,” he said. Present at the dinner were the chamber’s honorary life president Tan Sri William Cheng, honorary presidents, council members and media members. The chamber, which was established in 1904, will be celebrating its 110th anniversary this year. Some of the prominent leaders of the chamber include Loke Yew, Chan Sow Lin, Loke Chow Kit and Tun H.S. Lee. “Their contribution is invaluable and vital to the development of the nation and the society. We also look forward to another century and hope to leave behind a legacy for the new generation and the nation. The media’s continuous support in this journey is vital,” he said. The chamber’s objective is to actively aggregate businesses and industries for economic advantages and benefits for the nation. In addition, it also promotes social welfare, cultural and educational activities to heighten awareness of national unity.
