.. JODA South Sudan (Xinhua) -- A South Sudanese woman [left] helps her fellow unload a package off her head while other South Sudanese refugees [right] rest upon their arrival in Joda of Sudan, where Sudan’s White Nile state meets South Sudan’s Upper Nile. More South Sudanese civilians are swarming into neighboring countries to avoid the escalating internal violence and insecurity, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said on Tuesday. UNITED NATIONS (Xinhua) -- The World Food Programme ( WFP) and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) on Friday started a joint operation to deliver food, vaccines, nutrition supplements and other vital relief supplies to Akobo, in Jonglei State, which is one of the most isolated areas of South Sudan, a UN spokesman told reporters here. "The two agencies are using helicopters and air drops to assist 30,000 people in urgent need and have set up emergency distribution points for food, health, protection, education and sanitation," Farhan Haq, the deputy UN spokesman, said at a daily news briefing here. Akobo is the first location the two UN agencies are reaching under a new joint strategy. Fourteen such missions are planned over the next month, seeking to support as many as 250,000 people in remote, conflict-affected communities in Jonglei, Upper Nile and Unity states. Other agencies are also expected to join the partnership, according to Haq. Millions of people in war-wracked South Sudan are facing a food shortage as the rainy season approaches, John Ging, operations chief for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, warned Tuesday, denouncing inadequate funding for humanitarian aid efforts. "We are facing the possibility of a catastrophic situation in food security," said Ging, who recently visited South Sudan. "We are not using the word famine right now but that’s what is on the horizon... for millions of vulnerable people. More than 700,000 people have been forced to flee their homes since mid-December, when violence erupted between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and fighters loosely allied to former vice president Riek Machar. Another 250,000 people have sought refuge in Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya and neighboring Sudan. . U.N. NAIROBI (Xinhua) -- Two UN agencies on Friday begun assisting 30,000 people in urgent need of humanitarian aid in South Sudan’s Jonglei State, near the Ethiopian border. In a joint operation, UNICEF and WFP are delivering food, vaccines, nutrition supplements and other vital relief supplies to one of the most isolated areas of conflict affected South Sudan. WFP Country Director Chris Nikoi said the conflict in South Sudan is pushing millions of people further into hunger and complicating efforts to provide relief. "We are enormously concerned that things could get worse," Nikoi said in a statement received in Nairobi. Since the start of the brutal crisis in South Sudan, thousands of people have been killed, more than 700,000 people have been displaced within South Sudan, and nearly a quarter of a million have fled to Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan and Uganda. Nearly five million people are in urgent need of basic humanitarian aid. After nearly 100 days since conflict erupted, limited humanitarian access and rains threaten aid efforts and have made children more vulnerable than ever to disease and malnutrition. Akobo is the first location the two agencies have reached under a new joint strategy. Fourteen such missions are planned over the next month, seeking to support as many as 250,000 people in remote, conflict-affected communities in Jonglei, Upper Nile and Unity states. Other agencies are expected to join the partnership. . LONDON (Xinhua) -- Britain will provide seeds and fishing kits to families in South Sudan to help ease a possible hunger crisis, British Secretary of State for International Development Justine Greening said here. The materials will reach farmers before the rainy season begins in the African country at the end of April, after which they will be unable to sow their crops, the British Department for International Development (DFID) announced. The 8.3-million-pound (about 13.8 million U.S. dollars) grant aims to help 390,000 people feed themselves for a period of 12 months. A total of 40,000 families will be given either seeds to grow staple crops, nutrient rich vegetables or hooks and lines to catch fish for themselves and others, according to the DFID. The aid will contribute to an appeal from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for 47 million pounds to assist around 2.3 million people in need of support, the DFID said. South Sudan has rich oil deposits and significant potential in agriculture, forestry, fishery and animal husbandry. However, due to long-time armed conflict, South Sudan is one of the poorest regions in Africa, backward in infrastructure, public services and education. . UNITED NATIONS (Xinhua) -- Both heads of the World Food Programme (WFP) and the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) on Monday arrived in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, on a joint trip to meet conflict-affected people and to review the response and needs there, amid a spiralling humanitarian crisis. The WFP executive director, Ertharin Cousin, and the UN high commissioner for refugees, Antonio Guterres, will spend two days in South Sudan to meet displaced people, partners and local authorities, before crossing over the border to meet some of the more than 80,000 refugees that are currently in Ethiopia, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said at a daily news briefing here. More than 800,000 people have been displaced in South Sudan by the conflict, which flared up on Dec.15, said Dujarric. "This includes 68,000 people who are sheltering in UN peacekeeping bases. A further 254,000 refugees have crossed into neighboring countries seeking shelter and food. An inter-agency appeal led by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is calling for more than 370 million U.S. dollars to fund the refugee response in Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan and Uganda, he said. Earlier this month, the United Nations said that recent heavy rains in Juba further worsened "already difficult living conditions" there, and the UN Mission in the world’s youngest country (UNMISS) and humanitarian workers were responding to the effects of heavy rain. Millions of people in war-wracked South Sudan are facing a food shortage as the rainy season approaches, John Ging, operations chief for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), warned early last week, denouncing inadequate funding for humanitarian aid efforts. More than 700,000 people have been forced to flee their homes since mid-December, when violence erupted between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and fighters loosely allied to former vice president Riek Machar. Another 250,000 people have sought refuge in Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya and neighboring Sudan. . NAIROBI (Xinhua) -- Heads of the World Food Programme (WFP) and UN refugee agency (UNHCR) arrived in South Sudan on Monday to review the on-going humanitarian response and needs amid spreading hunger and displacement. WFP’s Executive Director Ertharin Cousin and the UN Antonio Guterres will spend two days in South Sudan to meet displaced people, partners and local authorities, before crossing over the border to meet some of the more than 80,000 refugees in Ethiopia. "Large-scale population displacement and disruption of markets and trade routes are creating a food security crisis," said Cousin in a joint statement issued in Nairobi. "People are in acute need. "Humanitarians require two things: safe access to those in need and the funds to bring in lifesaving supplies – food, shelter, vaccines, healthcare and other aid. "Several countries have contributed generously, but at current levels we are only able to cover a fraction of the needs," she said. The agencies are alarmed at the impact of ongoing violence in South Sudan where more than 800,000 people have been displaced in South Sudan by the conflict, which flared up on December 15, 2013. This, the agencies said, includes 68,000 people who are sheltering in UN peacekeeping bases, adding that a further 254,000 refugees have crossed into neighboring countries seeking shelter and food. According to agencies, humanitarian access to refugees, internally displaced persons and other vulnerable populations is increasingly challenging due to continuing warfare and shifting conflict lines. The two agency heads are concerned about the number of people cut off from any form of aid and the concern that violence has put farming to a halt in some areas. "It is heartbreaking to see that some of the very people who had fled the war two decades ago, people we helped to return to South Sudan after independence, are having to flee for their lives again, many back to the very same places where they lived in exile, " said Guterres, noting 40,000 people have crossed into Sudan to escape recent fighting. The UNHCR says insecurity and hunger are forcing more South Sudanese to flee into neighboring countries particularly in Kenya, Sudan, Ethiopia and Uganda. Competition for natural resources – including wood, grass and grazing land – has recently boiled over into "tit-for-tat" attacks, forcing up to 8,000 refugees to flee Yusuf Batil camp. The world’s youngest nation has 3.7 million people who are currently at high risk of food insecurity and without livelihood opportunities. Over the last three months since the start of the conflict more than half a million people have received food assistance inside the country, but continued conflict, combined with the onset of the rainy season has made it difficult to reach many people in need. The relief effort has been further hampered by a severe lack of funds. Additionally, South Sudan was also hosting some 220,000 refugees from Sudan in camps close to conflict areas. An inter-agency appeal led by UNHCR is calling for more than 370 million U.S. dollars to fund the refugee response in Ethiopia, Kenya, Republic of Sudan and Uganda. WFP is facing a funding shortfall of 224 million dollars inside South Sudan over the next six months, while humanitarian partners require a further 42 million dollars for shelter and other non- food items. . KHARTOUM (Xinhua) -- More than 215,000 people have been displaced due to the increasing violence in Sudan’s Darfur region since the beginning of 2014, the United Nations African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) and the Office of the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan said on Thursday. UNAMID Deputy Joint Special Representative Joseph Mutaboba and the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan Ali Al-Za’ tari on Thursday issued a joint statement in which they expressed deep concern over the increasing violence in Darfur. "Last month, a wave of violence has been underway in Darfur, affecting tens of thousands of people. "Since the beginning of 2014, more than 215,000 people in Darfur have been displaced from their homes. Many people in Darfur have no choice but to flee their homes in fear," the statement said. "It is particularly troubling that, in the face of this violence, the UN and the humanitarian community at large are being increasingly constrained from helping the majority of those affected. "Due to the access restrictions and security constraints placed upon humanitarian agencies, even monitoring the numbers of people who have been displaced from their homes is increasingly challenging," it added. The statement urged the Sudan government and all actors and parties involved in the conflict and the international community to take robust measures to ensure the protection of civilians and unimpeded access of aid workers in Darfur. Sudan’s Darfur region has been witnessing a civil war since 2003 under mounting violence due to armed clashes between the Sudanese army and rebel groups in addition to tribal violence. . NAIROBI (Xinhua) -- Seven international aid agencies warned Wednesday of worsening humanitarian situation in Sudan and South Sudan and called on the international to scale up response. Operations Director of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) John Ging cited an urgent need to mobilize funding for the crisis in Sudan, where some 6.1 million people currently need assistance, a 40 percent increase over this time last year. "The people of Sudan are facing an overwhelming humanitarian crisis that has almost entirely slipped off the international community’s radar," Ging said in a statement received in Nairobi on . The agencies—FAO, UNICEF, WHO, UNHCR, IOM, OCHA and Danish Refugee Council—expressed deep concern about the massive and growing humanitarian needs in Sudan and the conflict devastating South Sudan and its people. According to UN, malnutrition and food insecurity are escalating at an "alarming" rate, with some 500,000 children affected. The situation is particularly dire in Darfur, where renewed violence is displacing larger and larger numbers of civilians – almost 400,000 newly displaced in 2013, and almost 200,000 more so far this year. He added that the situation in Sudan requires an end to conflict and a more generous response from the international community. So far this year, the UN and partners have only received 3 percent of the 995 million U.S. dollars requested for humanitarian activities in Sudan. Ging said that the emergency directors engaged in a constructive dialogue with Sudanese authorities and emphasized the need for greater access for humanitarian organizations particularly in Darfur, South Kordofan and Blue Nile States.
