April Fools' Day sets a challenge for news junkies as they are bombarded with bogus news stories, some so subtle as to be nearly undetectable. But here is a round-up of some of this year's bizarre stories that are true, or seriously intended at least. 1. Heston Blumenthal is moving the Fat Duck restaurant to Melbourne, Australia, for six months. The three Michelin-starred restaurant in Bray, Berkshire, will close for renovations from the end of December this year and the whole team - along with some fixtures and fittings - will head down under. The Crown Towers hotel will play host to the restaurant from February 2015. 2. A resident of Peterhead in Aberdeenshire is decorating dog mess on the pavement with strawberries and cream. Theresa Ritchie wants to draw attention to the small mounds and also embarrass owners into picking up more. The vigilante also uses cake icing and Nutella in her unusual labelling strategy. On 1 April 1957, the BBC current affairs programme Panorama fooled the nation with a report about the annual spaghetti harvest. Michael Peacock, who commissioned the film, recalls how his team came up with the idea and kept it secret before broadcasting to a credulous audience. 3. Ambitious internet sellers were trying to sell a discontinued flavour of car air freshener for ?450 on ebay. The Jelly Belly 3D Juicy Flavour used to retail at ?3.49 but is now being replaced by other flavours. The item was later withdrawn although there are other sellers still trying to get ?100 for their fresheners. 4. Sand from the Sahara desert landed on David Cameron's car. The phenomenon, sometimes known as blood rain, leaves a thin layer of red dust behind. The particles are swept up by winds in North Africa and can be blown for hundreds of miles in the right conditions. 5. A hotel owned by Andy Murray is now open for business. The 26-year-old tennis star bought Cromlix House, near his home town of Dunblane, last year. It has been converted into a 15-room luxury hotel with its own loch, chapel and tennis court. It is already fully booked for the Ryder Cup. Murray was best man at his brother Jamie's wedding there in 2010. 6. A candidate for the Holy Grail, the supposed cup from which Jesus drank at the last supper, has been found in Spain. The goblet, made of agate, gold and onyx, has had to be removed from display at a church in Leon after crowds flocked to see it. Two historians published a book saying it could be the famous chalice. They started their search after the discovery of two Egyptian parchments at a university in Cairo. The cup will not be displayed until the church of San Isidro has found a suitably large space to accommodate the throngs of visitors. 7. Manchester United's Old Trafford ground could be renamed after Nike in a ?500m deal. Football commentator Richard Keys originally made the claim and it has now been restated by the Daily Star. The club have dismissed the allegations as "rubbish". 8. Rats as big as cats are roaming the streets of Birmingham. The city had 5,100 rat alerts in the past year and pest controllers reported seeing one rodent which was 2ft long and the "width of a brick". Bad weather is thought to have increased the number of call-outs by forcing the monstrous creatures indoors. 9. Traditionalists in Brittany are upset by the spread of multiple cheek kissing. People in the Celtic-tinged region of France usually only greet others with a single kiss. But some people are adapting the style from elsewhere in France where between two and four kisses are normal. An internet campaign - The Group of the Rehabilitation of the Single Kiss in Brest - has now been launched. 10. A man lost over 14st (196lb, 90kg) using morris dancing. Richard Landon had reached a weight of 28st 2lb thanks to excess pies and alcohol. But his rapid weight loss coincided with taking up traditional British folk dancing. The great birthday robbery More than 170,000 people in the UK had an hour of their birthday cruelly stolen on Sunday. Why did God make Eve? Why not just stop with Adam? God made Eve for the same reason God makes anything—as a celebration of his own glory. God was up to something of eternal importance in making his special image-bearers male and female. When God made Eve he was magnifying his supreme glory. He was making a womanly creature who could enjoy him and reflect his glory back to him forever. I would like to suggest to you that Paul says “woman was made for man” (1 Cor. 11:9), ultimately, because the Church is made for Christ (Rev. 21:2). Eve was not Adam’s original idea. Our first parents did not woo, solicit, or choose each other. This was an arranged marriage, a match literally made in heaven: “Then God said, ‘It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him’” (Gen. 2:18-24). Eve was God’s original idea. God approaches Adam with the blueprints for a male-and-female creation. If it were not for God, Adam would have never realized that it was not good for him to be alone. He did not know any better. He was not lonely, and if he was he didn’t know it. In an unfallen world, walking with God is not lonely. So why did God say “it is not good that man should be alone”? When we read this passage, we tend to automatically insert a few extra words, “it is not good for Adam that Adam should be alone.” But in doing so, we have slightly missed the point. God’s creativity is not about us. God’s creativity is God’s way of seeing and savoring God’s own glory. “Everything comes from God alone. Everything lives by his power, and everything is for his glory” (Rom. 11:36). “The Lord made everything for his own purposes” (Prov. 16:4). If this is true of creation in general, it is especially true of the creatures made in God’s own image and likeness. The woman is good “for the man” only because she completes God’s pattern for his special creatures to reflect God’s glory back to God (1 Cor. 11:9). The reason it is not good for Adam to be alone is ultimately because it is not good for God’s glory that Adam should be alone, “everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory” (Isa. 43:7). Adam did not design Eve’s female body or her feminine heart for his own pleasure. Eve was not made merely to help Adam with the dishes and laundry. Adam is not Eve’s ultimate ground and final goal. Eve is the absolute pinnacle of creation, the crown of Adam, “the glory of the man” (1 Cor. 11:7). She was sculpted to “make known the riches of God’s glory upon vessels of mercy” (Rom. 9:23). And Eve was made to join Adam in knowing and treasuring and showing the glory of God above all else. Eve was God’s idea, made for God’s glory. Without Eve, the image of God’s own Trinitarian glory in man would be insufficient, lacking. So God sovereignly declares, “it is not good that man should be alone.” Then he immediately follows up with his special divine solution: “I will make him a helper fit for him. But what happens next? Don’t we tend to jump immediately to the creation of Eve? God says it is not good that Adam is alone … so God makes Eve. But this is not how the story goes. By jumping to the creation of Eve, we miss the scene in between the “it is not good” announcement and the creation of Eve. I will make him a helper fit for him. to see what he would call them. What just happened? We were reading about the creation of Eve, but now we are reading about a day at the zoo? Instead of getting a few helpful tips about sex and romance, Adam gets a lesson in taxonomy, in the scientific study and classification of animals? There is something here that is often missed. Whatever the man called the animals, that was their name. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. and brought her to the man. So why did God wait to make Eve? Why this season of delay and aloneness? And why the field trip to the zoo? The answer, I think, is that God wanted to teach Adam something. But what? The moral of the story cannot be that Adam is “just another animal.” Adam alone has God’s breath; he alone has dominion over the rest of creation, and this is witnessed in the naming of the animals, for the authority to name something is an enormous power. Adam is a creature, but he is not just another organism among organisms. What if by bringing Adam the animals “two by two,” as it were, God was showing him not only that he has an authority over these animals, but that there is a fundamental need of the two sexes for each other? You see, the other animals had a completeness Adam did not have. The man had no complement, no “helper.” The text gives us a strong clue that this is the moral of the story: “But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him.” In the naming of the animals, God was drawing Adam’s attention to an arrangement, a norm. Only after Adam realizes that he is missing out on the fullness of God’s male-and-female design do we read: “So God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and took one of his ribs and made it into a woman and brought her to the man.” Immediately, as the direct result of God’s creation, the text says: “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” This one-fleshness and rich otherness, this cleaving and completing and complementing of being male and female, is paradigmatic of human flourishing. It is essential to worship. It is a foreshadowing of Christ and the Church (Eph. 5:32). In delaying the creation of Eve, God was giving Adam a lesson in the basic pattern and design of how humanity is to bear God’s own image and to bring him glory: as man and woman. Adam and Eve together complete the wondrous monument to God’s name that is man. Eve was made to join Adam in loving God, to help him in bringing God glory. God’s gift to Adam is ultimately a gift for God’s own exultation. By spacing out the creation of Adam and Eve, God was also drawing Adam’s attention to the gift of Eve. Failing to notice a gift dishonors it … and the giver. But to turn the gift in your hands, to say, “This is beautiful”—this honors the gift and the giver. Maybe this is what God was trying to teach Adam in delaying the gift of Eve: Notice the gift. Be astonished by it. Be glad for it, and care about it. To treasure the gift is the greatest gift Adam can give in return. And to remember what the gift is for—enjoying and sharing the beauty of the Lord. “You are worthy, O Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being” (Rev. 4:11). With his own hands and breath, God personally formed Adam from the mud of the land. Then he personally cut a rib from Adam’s flesh and formed Eve out of it and brought her to the man. This is not merely history. This is parable. “At last,” Adam says. “This is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken from Man.” The woman is an divine gift, Adam’s ezer kenegdo, his “lifesaver suited for him,” or “helpmeet” (2:18). Later, Adam names her Eve, “mother of all living. Why didn’t God make Eve from the ground, like Adam? Why from Adam’s own flesh? And notice that Adam did not have to do anything. The man was fast asleep when God cut the rib from his flesh and formed the woman out of it. Adam could never say, “I did that.” Eve was an unmerited gift. I would like to suggest to you that the creation of Eve is a parable burdened with meaning that will only get heavier throughout the biblical story: a man, God’s life giving breath or “spirit,” a pierced side, a death-like sleep, the building of a bride, undertones of salvation: in other words, the new Adam on the cross giving over his spirit to his new Eve, drawn from his pierced side. “Woman was made for man” (1 Cor. 11:9), ultimately, because the Church is made for Christ (Rev. 21:2). The church is the bride of Christ, the new Adam’s new Eve. She was prefigured in creation, prepared for in the Old Testament and announced by John the Baptist, founded by Christ, fulfilled by his cross and resurrection, and has been empowered with the filling of the Holy Spirit. She will be perfected in the glory of the Father as the assembly of all the baptized faithful (Rev. 14:4). Think of the juxtaposition of the sexes as a manual for the maximization for the glory of God. This is the rock bottom reason God looked at Adam and Eve and said, “It is very good.” God designed people in such a way that they could join God in loving God. This is why sexual differentiation is a “good” thing. This is why God created a person like Adam yet very unlike Adam. It is a unity and a fruitfulness that would otherwise have been impossible. Together, Adam and Eve are able to tell the story of God’s glory. Together, they are specially designed to be able to enjoy and to share the beauty of the most adorable Trinity. The creation story issues a clarion reminder of God’s enduring passion to glorify himself through the unity-in-diversity of his male-and-female creation. It comes to a climax in the incarnation, when Christ became the new Adam born of a daughter of Eve. Adam and Eve are a parable of Christ and the Church, the marriage feast of heaven and earth. Without Eve, we would not know the eternal Son of God as the incarnate Son of Man. Without Eve, we would not be God’s beloved “coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband” (Rev. 21:2). Without Eve, Jesus would not be the Bridegroom (Mark 2:19), and the Church would not be his “betrothed” (Matt 22:1-14; 25:1-13; 1 Cor. 6:15-17; 2 Cor. 11:2). Eve is a parable of the Church, and she is the spotless bride of the spotless Lamb (Rev. 22:17; Eph. 1:4). And this is the gospel treasure: “Christ loved the Church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her” (Eph. 5:25-26). God has joined us to himself in an everlasting covenant. We are flesh of Christ’s flesh and bone of Christ’s bones. What God has joined together, let no man put asunder. Still feeling the residual effects of springing ahead for daylight saving time? The hour of sleep lost -- or gained -- may play a bigger, perhaps more dangerous role in our body's natural rhythm than we think. It seems moving the clock forward or backward may alter the timing of when heart attacks occur in the week following these time changes, according to research to be presented at the American College of Cardiology's 63rd Annual Scientific Session. Data from the largest study of its kind in the U.S. reveal a 25 percent jump in the number of heart attacks occurring the Monday after we "spring forward" compared to other Mondays during the year -- a trend that remained even after accounting for seasonal variations in these events. But the study showed the opposite effect is also true. Researchers found a 21 percent drop in the number of heart attacks on the Tuesday after returning to standard time in the fall when we gain an hour back. "What's interesting is that the total number of heart attacks didn't change the week after daylight saving time," said Amneet Sandhu, M.D., cardiology fellow, University of Colorado in Denver, and lead investigator of the study. "But these events were much more frequent the Monday after the spring time change and then tapered off over the other days of the week. It may mean that people who are already vulnerable to heart disease may be at greater risk right after sudden time changes. Heart attacks historically occur most often on Monday mornings. Sandhu explains that in looking at other "normal" Mondays, there is some variation in events, but it is not significant. However, when he and his team compared admissions from a database of non-federal Michigan hospitals the Monday before the start of daylight saving time and the Monday immediately after for four consecutive years, they found a consistent 34 percent increase in heart attacks from one week to the next (93 heart attacks the Monday before compared to 125 the week after the start of daylight saving time for the duration of the study.). Although researchers cannot say what might be driving the shift in heart attack timing after the start of daylight saving time, they have a theory. "Perhaps the reason we see more heart attacks on Monday mornings is a combination of factors, including the stress of starting a new work week and inherent changes in our sleep-wake cycle," Sandhu said. "With daylight saving time, all of this is compounded by one less hour of sleep. Whatever the reason, he said, the findings may indicate a need to better staff hospitals the Monday after setting our clocks forward. "If we can identify days when there may be surges in heart attacks, we can be ready to better care for our patients," said Sandhu. Gaining an hour in the fall may have the opposite effect, though authors don't know why there were fewer heart attacks on Tuesday rather than Monday. Researchers used Michigan's BMC2 database, which collects data from all non-federal hospitals across the state, to identify admissions for heart attacks requiring percutaneous coronary intervention from Jan. 1, 2010 through Sept. 15, 2013. A total of 42,060 hospital admissions occurring over 1,354 days were included in the analysis. Total daily admissions were adjusted for seasonal and weekday variation, as the rate of heart attacks peaks in the winter and is lowest in the summer and is also greater on Mondays and lower over the weekend. The hospitals included in this study admit an average of 32 patients having a heart attack on any given Monday. But on the Monday immediately after springing ahead there were on average an additional eight heart attacks. There was no difference in the total weekly number of percutaneous coronary interventions performed for either the fall or spring time changes compared to the weeks before and after the time change. This study comes amid ongoing debate about whether daylight saving time is actually needed anymore. Widely implemented during World War I, it was primarily adopted to save energy. But some experts question whether it really saves energy and if it has negative health effects beyond just leaving us feeling groggy and out of sorts. "We go through daylight saving time periods twice yearly," Sandhu said. "We may want to look more closely at whether the shift in the timing of heart attacks seen after daylight saving time leads to any negative health outcomes. There are limitations to the study. For example, it was restricted to one state and heart attacks necessitating percutaneous coronary intervention, therefore excluding patients who died prior to hospital admission or intervention. Sandhu said it would be interesting to compare these findings against heart attack trends in Hawaii and Arizona, which do not have daylight saving time. Future research is also needed to better understand the role of our circadian rhythms on heart health. "We know from previous studies that a lack of sleep can trigger heart attacks, but we don't have a good understanding of why people are so sensitive to changes in sleep-wake cycles. Our study suggests that sudden, even small changes in sleep could have detrimental effects," he said. A new Community Speed Watch group has been trained up in Horsford. A new Community Speed Watch team has been trained up near Norwich. Ten people from Horsford were trained to use a speed gun in an attempt to increase the number of roadside checks and raise the awareness of speeding issues. They join nearby St Faith’s and Hellesdon, who already have Speed Watch schemes up and running. PC Andy Dye, beat manager, said: “One of the Hellesdon and Horsford Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) priorities is currently to support Community Speed Watch and tackle speeding across our parishes, so we are pleased that all three areas now have a scheme in place. Motorists who are caught speeding by the volunteers are sent warning letters from the police, advising them that they have been caught speeding and of the consequences. If significant numbers of drivers are caught speeding we will carry out checks ourselves where drivers can be issued with a fixed penalty notice or face a court appearance. “Whilst the teams are now in place, we continue to appeal for more volunteers to make them sustainable and to reinforce the message that speeding is not acceptable in Hellesdon and Horsford. The SNT, along with colleagues from roads policing and the special constabulary, also carried out vehicle checks on the A140 Holt Road/Cromer Road on March 24 to tackle other road-related issues. Thirty vehicles were stopped – four drivers received fixed penalty notices, one vehicle was seized for having no insurance, and five drivers of foreign vehicles received words of advice around tax. Objectors to a vision for the future of the Recreation Ground have welcomed rulings by an independent tribunal. A three-person panel has ordered changes to the way in which the charitable land that is home to Bath Rugby is overseen in future. One of the most significant decisions made by the tribunal is a series of declarations that effectively force the rugby club to develop its planned new stadium on its existing footprint, and are likely to make a land swap arrangement to give the club more acreage at its historic home impossible. But the three local residents who challenged a vision put together by the Charity Commission and the Recreation Ground Trust say it is decisions on the future governance of the land which are equally important. The tribunal - headed by barrister Peter Hinchcliffe - has ruled that Bath and North East Somerset Council should only have one representative on the trust charity which oversees the land on a day to day basis (rather than the current two). It also ruled that the trust - currently chaired by B&NES deputy leader Councillor David Dixon - should be chaired by a non-politician, to reduce the likelihood of a conflict of interest between the local authority and the charity. And the panel criticised what it called ‘mismanagement’ by the trust which it said had adversely affected its income since 2002. The tribunal was called into action because of objections from the chair of the Pulteney Estate Residents’ Association, Nigel Websper, Bathwick resident Jack Sparrow and Rosemary Carne, who lives near the Rec. Mr Websper said he was pleased they had been given a fair hearing. “It is clear that there has been a number of breaches of trust by the trustees of the Recreation Ground in relation to the arrangements entered into with Bath Rugby and in connection with the ongoing management of the Recreation Trust. These breaches of trust have resulted in actual losses for the Recreation Trust and have provided significant financial benefit to Bath Rugby which is a commercial entity. An example of this is the ‘’below market’’ rent charged to Bath Rugby by the Recreation Trust under the 1995 lease. The amendments to the scheme specified in the judgment are intended to sort out the historic problems with how the charitable trust of the Recreation Ground has been managed by B&NES and to provide a platform for this charitable land to be managed properly within the constraints of charity law going forward. This judgment is not about Bath Rugby per se but is instead about putting a scheme in place to allow this charitable land to be managed properly, within the law, and as originally intended. The tribunal ruled: “The position of B&NES as the continuing trustee after the point at which the trust was found to be charitable, as the operator of the leisure centre on the charity’s land and as a local authority supportive of the successful rugby club in Bath presented real conflicts of interest. It said the trust had failed to carry out rent reviews when they becamse due under the club’s 1995 lease, adding: “This has left the charity short of funds and with limited options. Ms Carne said Mr Hinchcliffe had made it clear that the trustees had failed in their duties. “The decision elements announced ensure the new trustees - with reduced B&NES Council involvement - are able to manage the charitable trust of The Rec appropriately going forward and desist from aligning their activities with the commercial plans of one sport. He has further charged them with negotiating and collecting monies owed, to put The Rec Trust on a secure financial basis for the good of all beneficiaries: the people of Bath. Get Involved! But that has changed this year. This year, 31 safety patrol members were all smiles when they heard they will break the five-year travel drought and head to the nation's capital in May. The goal of the trip is to let students who provide a civic service check out how others — namely their elected officials — provide civic service in Washington. Safety patrol sponsor Daniel Vivar said patrols don't just monitor hallways looking for rule breakers. They serve as role models, earning top grades and showcasing behavior for fellow classmates to follow. It had been a school custom to reward patrols for a job well done with a trip before they head to middle school. The push to raise $31,000 to cover all travel expenses began as soon as students took their seats on the first day of school. As Principal Joe Peccia settled into his job as the school's new leader in August, he heard about several failed efforts to raise enough money for the trip. He said he didn't want to see his student ambassadors miss out on the trip because they couldn't afford it. With an overwhelming majority of his students coming from low-income families struggling to pay bills, he knew money would be the key factor in determining whether the trip would happen. "We weren't going to let money be a barrier," Peccia said. So he asked community members to reach into their own wallets to help get the school's leaders to the nation's monuments. The quick two-day trip comes with a price tag of $900 per person to cover airfare, lodging and matching T-shirts so four trip chaperons can keep track of the kids. His request to send kids, many of whom have never stepped foot on an airplane or traveled outside the state, went viral thanks to online site indiegogo.com, which allowed donors to take a look into the cause they were helping. Vivar said the group deserves to learn outside the classroom after working hard to make sure the indoor learning environment is safe all year. "It's really cool that they get to go," he said. "They are going to get a lot out of it. Vivar said in the four years he has overseen the patrol group, the kids have settled for a more cost-effective year-end celebration closer to home, traveling to an Orlando theme park. Columbia Co. Our Opinion: Dr. Life is uncomplicated for Lionel Hollins these days. The former Trail Blazers guard and NBA head coach is working as a studio analyst for NBA-TV and hosts a two-day-a-week NBA talk show on Sirius radio. “I’ve been so blessed,” says Hollins, whose contract was not renewed by the Memphis Grizzlies after last season. “I get to see my kids more often. Recently saw my grand baby in Arizona. I’m reading books again. Went grocery shopping the other day. I get to spend a lot of time on my charity. Get to support the charities of other people who have supported mine over the years. “The freedom to not be in a gym, at practice, in a meeting ... I’ve had an opportunity to enjoy what life is all about again. Hollins will be in New York City tonight to watch the youngest of his four children, Austin, play what could be his final game for Minnesota. Austin Hollins, a 6-4 senior guard, is the No. 2 scorer and assists leader for the Golden Gophers, who face Florida State in the NIT semifinals at Madison Square Garden. Austin had a career-high 32 points in Minnesota’s 81-73 quarterfinal victory over Southern Mississippi. “He’s had a nice year,” the senior Hollins says. “I’m excited for him. He’s a good kid. You like to see people who do it the right way get rewarded. It’s not always that way. Though Hollins has enjoyed his time away from coaching, don’t get the wrong idea. Hollins would have liked nothing more than to have been on the bench with the Grizzlies when they played Portland at the Moda Center on Sunday. He’d love to be coaching Memphis, or another team, when the playoffs arrive in a couple of weeks. “Of course,” Hollins says when asked if he’d like to return to the coaching ranks. “I miss coaching. What I miss is the teaching ... the development of the team and the players. ... the players working together and watching them grasp it mentally, and then have them go out and do it physically. Hollin pauses, then adds, “Don’t take this the wrong way. I mean no disrespect to Dave Joerger (his successor as Memphis coach). But anybody (the Grizzlies) hire, if he lets the players play the way they want to play, they’re going to win. They know how to win. When I got there, they didn’t know how to win. category of a guy doing it the right way, but not getting rewarded. And he has a point. When he took over the Memphis job in January 2009, the Grizzlies had lost 126 of 175 games over the previous 2 1/2 seasons under Tony Barone and Marc Iavaroni. Gradually, Hollins built a winner, from 40-42 his first full season in 2009-10 to 46-36 to 41-25 in the strike-shortened 2011-12 campaign to 56-26 in 2012-13, advancing to the Western Conference finals before being ousted by San Antonio. Within 10 days, Hollins — who had worked his final season as a lame duck on the final year of his contract — was gone. Hollins fell victim to a change in ownership and management. Former owner Michael Heisley sold the club to a group led by California tech billionaire Robert Pera, now 36. Jason Levien, an attorney and former sports agent who had worked in the front office of the Sacramento Kings, became CEO and managing partner of the Grizzlies. title only. “It seemed like they had their minds made up when they came in,” Hollins says. “They had an agenda of how they wanted to do things, and what they wanted to spend. I didn’t fit into that. “I can accept that. It’s their prerogative. But when you look at the big picture, you say, ‘Wow, you’ve had some pretty good success.’ If I were at FedEx, for instance, I wouldn’t fire the employees who made it successful. The night the Grizzlies were eliminated from the playoffs, Hollins and his then-agent, Warren LeGarie, met with Levien for 2 1/2 hours. “When I walked out of there, I thought I was coming back,” Hollins says. Levien offered no public explanation, issuing only a statement that the club had decided to go in a different direction and thanking the coach for his work with the franchise. Joerger, who had been an assistant with Memphis since 2007 and had served 4 1/2 years under Hollins, was signed to a three-year contract with a team option for a fourth year at a reported $2 million per season. A coach with the credentials and experience of Hollins — or that of George Karl, who was interviewed for the job to replace Hollins — would have commanded at least twice that figure. The bottom line is very important to Pera and the new ownership group. Money surely played a part in Hollins’ demise, but there were other issues. In the weeks that followed Hollins’ ouster, other reasons emerged through “inside sources.” That Hollins couldn’t accept analytics and the advanced scouting metrics that are becoming increasingly in use in pro sports. That he clashed with John Hollinger, the one-time Portland resident who is an analytics devotee hired last season by the Grizzlies as vice president/basketball operations. That Hollins bellyached about the midseason trade that sent small forward Rudy Gay to Toronto for Tayshaun Prince, a deal that save the Grizzlies millions in future salary. That Hollins was having increasing problems communicating with his players. There is some truth to all of this. Hollins is an old-school coach, a strong personality who has developed a coaching style through the years based on a high level of expertise and intuitiveness about his players and how to put together a team. There was an incident with Hollinger at practice, during which Hollins loudly objected to his interference with a player. Hollins says he spoke with Hollinger afterward and that both men apologized to each other. (Hollinger did not return a phone message. “I have no problems with John,” Hollins says. “I have no problems with analytics. The only problem I have is with the idea there’s just one way to do things. You look for every advantage and whatever tools you can utilize to help your team be better. Part of that is having relationships with the players I have to deal with every day. “It’s not just numbers. I’m dealing with emotions and egos and sensitivities and insecurities. It’s easy to say these guys need to play so many minutes and this group is the best group to have on the floor at the particular time. It’s not cut and dried like that. “I want to be perfectly clear, I have no problems with analytics. I expressed that to management here. If there is a sophisticated mechanism to help us win, I’m all for it. But there has to be a balance. I don’t think basketball is as numbers-oriented as baseball, for instance. A coach knows who he can count upon at different times during a game. It’s why I trusted Zach (Randolph) to walk up there and make free throws at the end of a game. It’s a feeling that has nothing to do with numbers. The experiences a coach has cannot be discarded completely. Hollins played for the great Jack Ramsay in Portland. “I once asked Jack how he decides to choose somebody to run a play for at the end of a close game,” Hollins says. “He said, ‘I look at everybody’s eyes when they’re coming toward me (for the timeout). The player looking me in the eye and wants the ball is the person I’m going with.’ I played with players who could have great games, but when it comes down to the last shot, they don’t want that weight. Hollins was against the trade of Gay, an important piece to the Grizzlies’ success. “But I didn’t speak out on the trade,” Hollins contends. “I was asked a question. I said I hated to trade Rudy. We were winning, and it was the best team we’ve had, with him on the floor. With (Pera and Levien), it was economics. I understand small-market economics. Champagne taste, bare budget. They chose to go that way because it saved a lot of money. “If you want to make a decision, be up-front and tell everybody why. That’s fine. But don’t try to say it’s because of a young player’s inefficiency. That’s not why you traded him. It would appear Pera and Levien were uncomfortable with Hollins — a man nearly twice their age — and more comfortable with Joerger, 39. And also more comfortable with the salary he is making. “Again, that’s OK,” Hollins says. “But don’t put out there that they got rid of the coach because he doesn’t communicate well, he’s too hard on players, that they want to create a friendly culture. That’s all propaganda. Just say, ‘His numbers were too high for what we wanted to pay. Hollins is reluctant to speak on the subject. Only with prodding from a reporter he has known since 1977 is he willing to reveal such thoughts. hard to accept,” he says. “For a while, I was in a depressed state. When something like that happens, you blame yourself. done differently. “At some point, you come to grips with it. It had nothing to do with me. They made that decision because that’s the decision they wanted to make. Hollins says he has found himself pulling for the Grizzlies as the season has moved on. “I’m happy for Zach, Tayshaun, Mike Conley, Marc Gasol, Tony Allen,” he says. “All those guys I’ve coached, I’m excited for them. I would be wrong to root against them having success. I would even be wrong to root against the Grizzlies to have success. I’ve been fired before. Life is too short to be miserable. After being fired, Hollins interviewed for vacancies with Denver and the Los Angeles Clippers. “With the Nuggets, I don’t think I was high on their radar,” he says. “If Doc (Rivers) had stayed in Boston, I think I’d have been the Clippers coach. Doc was the better fit, and he’s a great coach. They made a good hire there. Hollins says he chose not to pursue an assistant coaching job in the NBA. “I’ve been a head coach the last five years,” he says. Would he take a head coaching job in college? “It would have to be a really good opportunity,” he says. “I have no idea,” he says. “I think I will, but with certainty? No. I have confidence I will, yes. But we’re in a crazy business. Hollins has a new agent, Steve Kauffman, and a portfolio that merits another head-coaching job. “I’ve had several coaches I know ask, ‘How in the world can Lionel not have a job?’ “ Kauffman says. “It’s the hardest thing to predict, because you don’t know how many jobs will be open. There could be as few as two or three. Among the veteran coaches — nothing against the other guys — Lionel is generally rated a more desirable commodity. If a team goes in that direction, he has a very good chance to get a job. Hollins is one of the bright minds in the business. Yeah, he’s old-school, but so are Karl and Gregg Popovich and Rick Adelman. Hollins knows how to win, and there’s an owner out there who will want his expertise and know-how and be willing to pay it.
